Meet the Family and the Mission !

Butternut Retreat is manifesting from a simple desire: to create a living sanctuary where the pulse of nature dictates life. Where time is lost to presence and stillness provides remembrance.

We are nestled in the heart of Cumberland, Virginia, where our farm is more than just a place of production; it is a space for connection. We believe that earth's quiet wisdom can be found through dedication to our sustainable gardens, ethically raised poultry and conscientious care for wildlife. Offering a path back to presence and harmony. We offer a hug for your soul as we welcome you to our farm.

Our story begins in Virginia and remains...

Brian raised in Virginia Beach, was shaped by the coast and grounded by two small-town, country-loving parents from North Carolina who instilled respect for land, self-reliance, and honest work.  Vanessa grew up inside the beltway in Annandale, Virginia; by a loving midwestern mother and an old-world Italian immigrant father whose values of family, tradition, and stewardship ran deep.  Different upbringings, shared values.

Together, we raised three children through the seasons of a fast-paced Northern Virginia life.  Ethan and Briana are now grown, creating their own paths in Northern Virginia, a source of pride and continuity.  Our youngest, Gwendolyn, is growing up here in Cumberland, embracing the slower rhythm, open space, and daily connection to the natural world. Through them, we are reminded that the choices we make today shape the lives that follow.

Though life and career carried us into the pressure and pace of the metropolitan world, our connection to the land, and to our home state; never faded.  Virginia has always called us: diverse, resilient, and rooted. Over time, that call became unmistakable.  We weren’t seeking escape from work, but a return to work that mattered.

This farm represents a deliberate shift away from exhausting schedules and back to the earth at the heart of this great state. A return to presence instead of pressure, to tangible efforts, building something real, together, with care and intention.

We steward this land with humility and responsibility, guided by respect for what came before and commitment to what comes next. This is a working landscape — shaped by weather, patience, and hands-on effort — not a trend or a performance.

Today, our family is focused on building something enduring: a place that nourishes, serves community, welcomes travelers, and remains firmly rooted in Virginia soil for generations to come.

We are grateful to be here.
We are committed to doing it right.
And we welcome you.
